Ginkgo Additional information
Ginkgo increases blood flow and so can increase tissue nutrition. It tones and helps normalise circulation as it has a relaxing (vasodilating) effect on arteries and a toning effect on veins. Ginkgo increases the fluidity of blood and in this way may improve peripheral circulation. Improving circulation can enhance the utilization of oxygen and glucose by the body.
Brain cells require large amounts of energy to function properly. Glucose and oxygen need to be constantly supplied to the brain cells to create energy, as the brain has very small energy reserves. Many studies have shown positive effects of ginkgo on working memory, the speed of information processing and learning.
Vitamin D3 Additional information
Vitamin D is essential for the normal development and growth of cells, bones and teeth.
- The sun's rays are the primary source of vitamin D but exposure needs to balanced so as to avoid increasing the risk of skin cancer.
- Vitamin D deficiency is a common condition affecting a significant number of Australians in which the body has inadequate stores of vitamin D.
- Untreated vitamin D deficiency can lead to serious complications, such as bone fractures and bone deformities.
- Vitamin D deficiency is treatable with supplements and adequate exposure to sunlight.
Vitamin D is vital for good health, growth, strong bones, calcium absorption and immune function. The best source of vitamin D is UVB radiation from the sun. In fact, 90 per cent of our vitamin D is made in the skin with the help of sunshine. UVB sunlight converts cholesterol in the skin into vitamin D. The fact we need to expose bare skin to the sun can be confusing considering there is also a need to be wary of too much sun in order to avoid skin cancer. Staying out of the sun at the most dangerous time in the middle of the day is still good practice, particularly during summer, but a balanced approach to sun exposure is necessary to avoid the risk of skin cancer and yet get an adequate dose of sunshine.
